O'Neil auditioned for Canadian Idol's third season at the beginning of 2005 when she was still a high school student. The judges loved her voice and she advanced to the Top 100 Round. O'Neil won high praises from the jury. She was however a complete loser in both the top 10 Week and Top 9 Week of the Finals. The judges were shocked by the outcome and urged fans to vote for singers with impressive singing skills similar to Melissa. O'Neil's performances were always top-quality that he never fell into the third place. She was the judge. Werner was confident, following another two incredible performances, that O'Neil would be the winner of the Canadian Idol competition, as she would be the first woman and the youngest contestant in history after the 7th September Finals of 2005. O'Neil was contacted immediately from Canadian Premier Paul Martin, congratulating on her victory on Canadian Idol.
